Mechanical Building Services: NZQA Standards & Courses
Build practical Mechanical Building Services skills through NZQA standards and bundled courses covering HVAC systems, ducting, pipework, commissioning, plant equipment and associated building infrastructure. These options support people working across commercial construction, facilities, hospitals, data centres and industrial buildings.
Choose an individual standard for a specific workplace requirement or a structured course bundle where several related skills need to be developed together. Already have the skills? Assessment-only options allow eligible learners to gain recognised NZQA credit for skills they can already demonstrate without completing unnecessary training. Tutor-supported options provide guidance where new skills need to be built.

What’s Included In the Mechanical Building Services Collection
Training options may include:
- HVAC drawings and system knowledge
- ductwork installation
- pipework and fabrication
- pumps, fans and plant equipment
- commissioning and pre-commissioning
- airflow and system performance
- heating and cooling systems
- hydronic systems
- worksite safety

- electrical isolation
Technicians may be involved during construction, installing and commissioning building systems, or later through servicing, maintenance and performance checks. This collection allows training to be selected around the learner’s role and the systems used in the workplace.
Individual standards can address one technical gap. Bundled courses offer a more structured way to build several connected skills. Employers can use recognised NZQA learning to upskill experienced staff, support progression or respond to new projects and equipment.
Review each listing for the NZQA level, credits, delivery format and workplace evidence requirements. A full apprenticeship remains the right option when someone needs broad development across the complete Mechanical Building Services trade and wants to work towards the Level 4 qualification.
Browse the Mechanical Building Services standards or choose a bundled course if you need to build several related skills. You can also learn about the full Mechanical Building Services pathway or explore our Air Conditioning Installation standards for closely related installation training.
